The One Thing You Can Never Get Back.
After more than 30 years in corporate roles as a manager, director, and executive in marketing and communications, I am still adjusting to the world of self-employment. The irony, however, is that even as I am carefully selecting my preferred clients, projects, and hours – I find that just like before, my single greatest challenge is a lack of time.
Reflecting on my years as a working mom with a demanding, full-time career, raising three children and balancing home, motherhood, marriage, and commitments, I remember the constant stress of not being able to get it all done. No matter how I tried, I was desperate for more time. More time with my kids. More time to work out. More time to travel, read, exercise, or just to get everything done that was on my never-ending “to do” list.
Today, I help clients who face that same dilemma. They want a clean and orderly home just as much as the next person, but they have to balance the time it takes to get organized with the needs of their kids, their spouse, parents, job, and just keeping the “lights on” with laundry, groceries, and getting the bills paid.
More than half of all women report that their work-life balance suffers because the number of requests for their time simply outpace the number of hours in a week. If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. I spent more than 30 years worrying that I wasn’t a good enough mom, wife, daughter, employee, or friend – because there simply weren’t enough hours to get to all the things I “should” be doing.
So, when it comes to that garage, pantry, closet, or playroom that you just can’t find the time to get under control, seriously – let yourself off the hook. Grant yourself the grace to bring in someone who can help lighten the load. Because whether you are working outside the home, raising a family full-time, or some balance in between – we all know that no matter how hard we try, we cannot turn back the hands of time. (Well, except for Daylight Savings Time, but that’s no help.)
